11 things only Acadians will understand

11 things only Acadians will understand...

1.   LA POUTINE (RÂPÉE)
No, it is not the Québécois dish of fries, gravy and cheese... and it's eaten plain, with molasses or with brown sugar. And it's amazing.

Don't judge a book by its cover...
Râpure is also delicious, despite appearances...

2.   Explaining to someone that Acadie (or Acadia) does not exist as a geopolitical entity (i.e. it's not really on a map).

There are many Acadian regions, but true Acadie is in our hearts... cheesy, but true.

3.   The cultural significance of a cleaning lady, an iconic poem written by an Englishman, and a star...

La Sagouine

TRÈS importante, cette étoile....
4.   Explaining to someone that you are indeed Acadian, despite having an anglophone surname or not even being able to speak French.

“Yes, I'm 3/4 Acadian. No, I can't speak French. My mother is Acadian, my father is English... these things happen! But yes, I like fricot and râpé."

5.   Pages upon pages of LeBlancs and Cormiers in the Moncton area phone book.

6.   Trying to successfully spell "Arseneau/ault/eault" without screwing up...
Angèle Arsenault, Thierry Arseneau, Marc Arseneault… ouff!

7. Going through your entire family tree when telling someone who you are.
"So, who are you exactly?"
"I'm Yvon à Adolphe à Aimée"
"OH! I know your uncle Leo!"
...

7.   Chiac (especially applies to Acadians of Southeast NB/Kent county).

8.   Trying to understand the Baie Sainte-Anne (NB) accent and the Baie Sainte-Marie (NS) one.

9.   STILL trying to understand why 15 août isn't a statutory holiday (or at least the 16th...)
On n'appelle pas ça le 15 août des fous pour rien...

10. All the fantastic musical artists!

And there are plenty more! Les Païens, Lisa LeBlanc, Fayo, Marie-Jo Thério, Joseph Edgar, Wilfred LeBouthilier.....

11. Finally, getting chills and even sometimes teary eyed when hearing Ave Maris Stella being sung during the flag raising.

(Start at 1:45)

JOYEUX 15 AOÛT ACADIENNES ET ACADIENS, DE NAISSANCE OU D'ADOPTION!
